Recipe Ingredients
- all-purpose flour - This recipe calls for all-purpose flour. Make sure you measure your flour correctly by spooning it into your measuring cup and leveling it off!
- butter - I always use unsalted butter for baking, but you can totally use salted butter if that's all you have! Just omit the salt that the recipe calls for.
- sugar - Granulated white sugar gives these cookies their classic sweet flavor and slight crispness.
- egg - Brings everything together and adds richness.
- vanilla extract - Make sure you're using pure vanilla extract for the best taste!
- baking powder - Helps the cookies rise slightly and gives them a tender texture.
- salt - Enhances all the flavors!
- sprinkles - Optional but so fun! Use any color sprinkles to match your theme or occasion.
Star-Shaped Cookie Cutter
I got a star cookie cutter set on Amazon (they come in various sizes from 2 to 4 inches), but there are individual cutters available as well. You should be able to find a star cookie cutter at a local Walmart, Target, or craft store! Depending on how big or small your cutter is, you might have to adjust the size of cookie dough you scoop for each cookie.
These cookies are classic sugar cookies, so they spread slightly when baked. That's why you cut them into star shapes after baking - they won't hold their shape if you cut them before! If you don't have a cookie cutter, you could carefully use a knife to cut a star shape out of them as well. Or just leave them round with cute star sprinkles!
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set this aside.
Step 2: In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes). Mix in the egg and vanilla until well combined. Gradually add in dry ingredients. Mix just until you no longer see streaks of flour and the dough comes together.
Step 3: Scoop about 2 tablespoons of dough onto a baking sheet, keeping about 2-3 inches between each cookie because they will spread slightly. If using, gently press sprinkles into the tops of each cookie before baking.
Step 4: Bake for 10-12 minutes until the edges are very slightly golden but the centers still look soft. Remove from the oven and immediately use a star-shaped cookie cutter to cut the cookies into stars (work quickly while they're still hot and pliable)! Allow the cookies to cool on the sheet for another 5-7 minutes, and then carefully transfer them to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.
What Can I Make with Star-Shaped Cookie Cutters?
You can use star cookie cutters for more things than just sugar cookies! I would use this on brownies, blondies, or even rice crispy treats. You could also use it on sheet cakes, banana bread, or pound cake to make fun star-shaped desserts!
Tips and Tricks
- Measure your flour correctly - I always recommend using a kitchen scale to weigh your flour. You can also spoon and level your flour when baking. Use a large spoon to gently scoop the flour into your measuring cup. Once it's full, use a flat edge (like a butter knife) to gently scrape across the top of the measuring cup.
- Use room temperature ingredients - The butter and egg in this recipe should be at room temperature before using them. I like to take my butter out about an hour before I start baking just to be sure!
- Work quickly with the cookie cutter - The cookies need to be hot when you cut them into stars so they don't crack. Have your cookie cutter ready and work efficiently!
- Use festive sprinkles - Match your sprinkles to the occasion! Red, white, and blue for Fourth of July, red and green for Christmas, or rainbow for birthdays!
- Don't overbake - These cookies continue cooking on the hot pan after you remove them from the oven. Take them out when the edges are just barely golden.
Decorating Ideas
- Before Baking: Press colored sugar or sprinkles into the dough before baking for a simple decorated look.
- After Baking: Let cookies cool completely, then drizzle with a simple glaze (powdered sugar + milk + vanilla) or royal icing.
- Get Creative: Use food coloring to tint your icing different colors, add edible glitter, or pipe designs with icing in a piping bag.
Storing & Freezing
These star-shaped sugar cookies will stay fresh in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. You can also freeze these cookies after baking them, for up to 3 months. Let them sit at room temperature to defrost.
To freeze the dough, scoop it into balls and freeze on a baking sheet until solid, then transfer to a freezer bag. Bake from frozen, adding 1-2 extra minutes to the baking time.
